On Screen

A friend got caught up in a little square. She had a trail following her. It came after her, like little stones on a path crossing through a river. Each step was a different memory, so many moments of emotion filled with others, with friends and family. They all had their problems. And the friend stood in the middle, looking at them. Waiting. Trying out but being. Being with them as she couldn’t be elsewhere.

Than one day the story changed. She had a new set of stones. She moved them. When the place changed, so did the persons. She made better decisions than others whom she loved. The intensity of friendship was not matched with the intensity of romance. Did she want the same thing? How did the large streets and pebble stones surround them, with the grandeur of the sculptures? Did they leave messages on those inspiring squares? The friend, Lenu, found a new her in larger boulevards with artwork not shying away from the sight. The sight of different persons. Who hid, in different places.

What do they signify for us? Lenu expected a fuller escape from the previous place. Despite every now and then slipping back into it in her mind. She moved to a different time. One episode after another gave me so much comfort than the books did. I blame myself when I choose the screen. But art is oozing out of it in a different way. Days and months go by without expression taking form. The author and the director leave us a message on that. One which comes from a very honest place. More honest than most visuals can put up with. Lenu stays in my screen. She lives there where Ferrante put her.
